Why Mathcamp?
Mathcamp was founded for two reasons:
- In a math class, not all students possess the same
ability in
mathematics. While the teacher's instruction benefits the class as a whole,
the talented few who could go deeper and further are not adequately
challenged by the content and pace. Mathcamp caters to this need of these
few. In some countries, there are special high schools for the
mathematically talented. Mathcamp partly compensates for the lack of such
schools elsewhere. In fact, Mathcamp tries to provide an answer to the
question: what is the proper high school mathematics education for the
future mathematician, or for one who might choose a career closely
intertwined with mathematics?
- The social and emotional needs of gifted children are
often not adequately met in a regular school setting -- indeed, many gifted
children feel isolated, lonely, or even stigmatized. Mathcamp provides a
caring social environment free of prejudice. In this atmosphere of mutual
tolerance, responsibility, and respect, many students find a true peer
group for the first time in their lives.
