AMS MEMOIRS STYLE PACKAGE
11
-------------------------
12
13
This package contains files to help authors use AMS-LaTeX to prepare a
14
manuscript for publication in the Memoirs of the AMS. We assume that
15
the following software is installed on your system.
16
17
LaTeX version 2e, December 1995 or later
18
AMS classes version 2.20.1, July 2009 or later
19
amsmath version 2.13, July 2000 or later
20
AMSFonts version 2.0, January 1995 or later
21
22
The current versions of these collections are included in the "required"
23
subset of TeX Live, as well as in most other common distributions.
24
25
If you have an older version of LaTeX or AMS-LaTeX, please upgrade, You
26
can retrieve the current versions of amsmath and the AMS classes from
27
CTAN at
28
29
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/required
30
31
We also assume that you are familiar with LaTeX and AMS-LaTeX document
32
structuring commands such as \section, \footnote, \newtheorem, etc., and
33
with the techniques for inputting math expressions.
34
35
1) This package contains the following files.
36
37
general files
38
39
README-MEMO-L.TXT overview of the Memoirs package (this file)
40
Author_Handbook_Memo.pdf AMS Author Handbook
41
creating-graphics.pdf Creating graphics for use in books and journals
42
amsbook.cls basis for all monograph-specific document classes
43
44
Memoirs-specific files
45
46
memo-l.cls Memoirs document class file
47
memo-l-template.tex Memoirs topmatter template
48
49
sample document files
50
51
chapter.tex monograph driver file
52
preface.tex preface
53
chap1.tex chapter
54
biblio.tex bibliography
55
index.tex index
56
57
2) Start by making a copy of the file memo-l-template.tex to
58
<uniquename>.tex, using a distinct name (perhaps your last name) in place
59
of <uniquename>. This will be your "driver file". Fill in the top matter
60
(title, author(s), etc.) following the instructions that appear as comments
61
in the file.
62
63
Please note that the title page generated by this package is intended as
64
a placeholder, for information only. The final title page will be created
65
at the AMS using the information provided on this placeholder page.
66
67
We recommend that chapters be prepared as separate files, using the sample
68
preface.tex and chap1.tex files as models; they are then called in using
69
\include{...} commands in your driver file.
70
71
3) More detailed instructions are given in the Author Handbook. This
72
manual is also available via the web from a link on the page
73
http://www.ams.org/arc/handbook
74
The handbook includes a checklist to be consulted, before keyboarding
75
your manuscript, in order to avoid the most common problems, as well as
76
detailed instructions for submitting your files to the AMS.
77
78
4) If your Memoir will contain figures, print out, or view on screen, the
79
file creating-graphics.pdf and read it. This file contains general and
80
specific guidelines for preparation of graphics (line art, photographs,
81
and other forms of illustrations) in a manner that will ensure their
82
accurate reproduction in print and on-line.
83
84
5) By default, the file chapter.tex listed above among the "sample document
85
files" uses the basic AMS monograph style, amsbook.cls. Change the
86
\documentclass{amsbook} line in this file to \documentclass{memo-l} and
87
then LaTeX the file, in order to view the printed Memoirs style. Note
88
that the abstract follows the table of contents; if the abstract is less
89
than a page in length, it will be placed on the back of the contents page.
90
91
Do NOT use the sample chapter.tex file as a "starter" for your Memoir.
92
Use the template file instead. The sample files should be used only for
93
your reference.
94
95
amsbook.cls is included in this package because of the 2010 update to the
96
Mathematics Subject Classification. This is the only significant change
97
to amsbook from the version in TeX Live distributions since 2005; the
98
updated version of amsbook.cls has been included in TeX Live since 2009,
99
so if you are using that distribution, you should delete the copy
100
included in this package.
101
102
6) One special option is provided: the ability to start chapters on the
103
next available page -- left-hand or right-hand. Beginning with amsbook
104
version 2.0, the default is to start chapters on right-hand, odd-numbered
105
pages (the option "openright"); to enable the option to start on the next
106
available page, use this command:
107
108
\documentclass[openany]{memo-l}
109
110
111
Should you have any technical questions that aren't answered by the FAQ,
112
please contact our Technical Support Group. The most effective method
113
is to send electronic mail to [email protected], including a concise
114
statement of the problem, along with (if appropriate) a brief file that
115
illustrates the problem and the log of your attempt to LaTeX the file.
116
If email is not an option, you can call 800-321-4AMS (800-321-4267,
117
in the U.S. or Canada) or 401-455-4080, or write to Technical Support,
118
Publications Technical Group, AMS, 201 Charles Street, Providence,
119
RI 02904-2294.
