The Description Problem for Ideals and Robots

May 15, 2025
Speaker: Stephanie A.

The ideal of a ring is a subset of the ring satisfying certain properties. They are critical to commutative algebra (the study of commutative rings) as well as algebraic geometry. In this Feynman talk, we first address the ideal description problem, that is, the issue of describing an ideal by a certain basis of polynomials - a Grobner basis in particular. Leading into the latter part of this talk, we then consider how to describe robotic motion via geometric means. Utilizing methods of Grobner bases, we address the inverse kinematic problem in robotic motion planning in illustrating an application of ideals and their properties.
