the uh Vietnam War was uh certainly expensive not only in in cost but in uh the long term effects as far as lives go uh when i was oh seven or eight years old and
6
just into uh first or second grade or so i was sitting there wondering whether this war would ever stop and whether it'd last another five or six years and i would end up in it and uh i i kept a little bit of an eye on it i had older
7
sisters that wasn't was not worried about going in to it but they had boy friends and the like that were concerned and so it struck home a little bit from that standpoint we didn't have any service people in Vietnam there in the immediate family so
8
uh
9
just the whole idea though of of what we were over there for and uh the very unpopular
10
problems that occurred here the riots and the protests and uh it just didn't seem to go over well with the general public like the last one did uh it it raised it to the forefront of of a lot of our thinking back then so
11
uh i i would tend to say that it was not worth it but then it's easier looking back at at the fact that we virtually lost if you want to call it that it's easy to say well yeah it was not worth it considering the results now had we won and it had been quick
12
uh maybe it would've been different but
13
14
15
i don't think so
16
17
18
i'm not really all that familiar i never was a Vietnam buff i'm not all that familiar with the beginning of it
19
20
21
well my father was my father was in Nam my brother was in Nam
22
yeah you know i had a lot of friends in Nam so
23
it's like it hit it hit pretty close
24
25
26
well do you think the reasons are any different than than what they did in
27
28
29
the reasons that they did it now and the reasons that they did it then are still the same
30
31
32
uh just somebody invaded and they decided to go help huh
33
34
35
there is
36
it's
37
it's yeah
38
the only difference is is the people here
39
the people now is going to back there but see they you can't take
40
like they you know they they are acknowledging the Vietnam vets now well but that's not going to work
41
42
43
right
44
45
46
because they are they were already misused when they came back and they're not going to forget that
47
48
49
right
50
51
52
so you know
53
and i know my brother won't he spent a lot of time so he came back totally screwed up
54
55
56
hum
57
58
59
so you know i i blame a lot on Uncle Sam because of the fact you know they had it in your living room and
60
61
62
um-hum
63
64
65
stuff like that
66
and i don't i didn't like that at all
67
because it makes you worry more
68
69
70
yeah and i never thought about that the news coverage might be
71
worse than
72
it you would be better off not knowing i guess
73
74
75
in a way it is because then you don't have to really worry that or if you see something and you you think it's your child or you think it's somebody you know and they are dead and then you know you you done went haywire for nothing
76
77
78
yeah
79
right
80
81
82
so
83
84
85
right
86
87
88
it's just it's i think the war then was just as useless as it is now
89
90
91
hum
92
93
94
but you know
95
should i it it's not really useless i guess really Saddam if they were going to do it i think they should have just kept going
96
97
98
that's true
99
100
101
instead of half doing the job
102
103
104
yeah
105
106
107
because the people still over there is in trouble
108
109
110
yeah it makes you wonder if if they'd had the same mentality in Nam if they'd have been able to
111
to just wipe out the thing you know go all out as it were
112
113
114
instead of doing all this political stuff that's half the problem
115
116
117
yeah
118
119
120
it's too much political politics involved in a war you know they tell you you can't do this but you know what
121
everybody else does not do like the United States people don't listen
122
123
124
that's right
125
126
127
they say we could not do certain things to them but they could do everything to us
128
129
130
right
131
132
133
you know and that's what makes it bad
134
135
136
the business about not going into Cambodia was that's bad news that's right
137
138
139
yeah but they but they did you know so you know it's like uh-huh sure right whatever you say
140
141
142
so
143
just
144
blow up any part of the country that they are occupying regardless of the boundaries
145
146
147
just like Storming Norman they should've let that man loose
148
149
150
yep
151
152
153
they should've just let him loose in the city he would have just cleaned house i think he would have done better
154
155
156
hum
157
well that's uh
158
159
160
so
161
162
163
i wonder what the i have not even looked at the cost i wonder if the cost was anywhere comparable as far as what they spent per day or what they spent per month
164
in Nam versus what they spent here it's almost like we moved an entire
165
organization the cities and all all the support team all the everything over there whereas in Nam it was kind of a little at a time but it was so protracted i i guess the average cost of a month was probably less back in Nam than it was this time
166
167
168
oh yeah
169
yeah it was plus it was less but still if you take it back then and do the do the do the uh
170
171
172
i don't what the
173
174
175
what do you call it the average the cost of living there and do it now and do the cost of living it still gonna cost you money it'll cost you about the same
176
177
178
cost of living adjusting yeah
179
yeah
180
181
182
so
183
184
185
i just didn't know how much support they gave them uh they didn't have
186
well like in this one they didn't have a whole lot of USO type stuff to have to put up or build buildings for it was all temporary
187
188
189
um-hum
190
191
192
but uh there there were bases that had permanent installation as far as entertainment and services went
193
194
195
um-hum
196
197
198
so i guess that cost a bit
199
200
201
and so you know see the ships people don't realize it but the ships and all that stuff that's still over there
202
203
204
yeah
205
206
207
and then you think about it Vietnam is how old and they still have prisoners of war
208
209
210
yeah
211
212
213
see i don't think that is right i think the United States should but they put down and go over there and be and just go over there and go through it period you know
214
find out where they are some people know the government knows that's the bad part
215
216
217
yeah they certainly shouldn't continue to deal with them as far as monies go
218
219
220
no but here we are you know Saddam wouldn't have been so bad if we had not gave him half the stuff he's got
221
222
223
yeah there is already talks of you know
224
dealing with them again it won't be long
225
226
227
um-hum
228
well he'll be back
229
230
231
yeah i guess it's
232
i don't know whether it's better to know what your enemy has or or you know fight against something you know is there or not have let him have anything i think i would rather not let him have anything
233
234
235
why give him the same advantage that you have
236
237
238
yeah certainly sell him lesser equipment
239
240
241
okay
242
yeah but nothing new but he had modern equipment scud launchers i mean let's get real here those are mobile missile launchers
243
244
245
yeah
246
they do make a mess
247
248
249
and then United States is not going to use them yeah right uh-huh
250
251
252
253
254
that's true
255
256
257
so you know it's like what do you want to do first
258
259
260
i mean we certainly made a
261
a mess out of the ar eas that we bombed in the latest war too bad they couldn't do that kind of concentration on uh in Nam
262
263
264
um-hum
265
266
267
they just were not allowed i mean it took years before they would even allow the bombing that is kind of
268
political i have no other words for it
269
270
271
nope there's nothing else that you can do about it it is just
272
you know i think they should've done more
273
than what they did over there and i still think they should've done more what they did over in uh Saudi Arabia
274
275
276
um-hum
277
278
279
because to me uh the United States went both these places and they made it worse for the people that's there
280
281
282
hum that's true that's true
283
284
285
so it depends on if you there you can see it if not then you will never know cause in the United States people never know what's going on
286
they just take whatever they get told
287
288
289
take whatever they are fed on the news and and go on
290
291
292
that's right
293
294
295
well i've got mister Carruthers waiting for my attention so i had better let you go
296
297
298
mister who
299
300
301
John Carruthers from Plano yeah so he's
302
303
304
oh
305
tell him hi
306
307
308
all right will do
309
310
311
okeydokey
312
313
314
um bye
315
316
317
bye
318
319
