well if you're from Iowa you must be very artsy-craftsy everyone i've ever known from the Midwest can do everything with their hands
12
13
14
okay
15
oh well actually i'm from California and before then i was from Utah so
16
17
18
i didn't know anyone ever moved from California to Kansas Iowa
19
20
21
well i grew up in California and then i went to school in Utah and i got married there and we stayed there for a while and then now we're in Utah Iowa
22
23
24
i'm teasing only because i'm from Indiana i really liked i like the Midwest
25
26
27
oh really
28
29
30
oh
31
32
33
but i married a Texan and they have a way of dragging you back home
34
35
36
37
38
39
40
anyway we're supposed to be talking about crafts do you um do you have any hobbies that that you do things with your hands like knitting or
41
42
43
um
44
well i crochet and i do water color and i um sew and i do fabric painting
45
46
47
oh you do a lot then do you do needlepoint also and cross stitching
48
49
50
um i've done some cross stitching
51
i haven't tried any needlepoint yet how about you
52
53
54
um actually i i'm pretty untalented i used to do a lot of knitting and crocheting um
55
56
57
oh right
58
59
60
but i i don't know somehow i i don't have the time anymore
61
but i have all these friends that wherever you go they they sit down and the next thing you know they pull out of their um bags some their most recent uh needle craft
62
63
64
65
66
oh really
67
68
69
and in December everyone was doing stockings you know these gorgeous detailed minute tiny stitch stockings
70
71
72
uh-huh
73
oh God
74
oh yeah well those take a lot of time i only can do things that are pretty fast because
75
76
77
yes
78
79
80
we just um got our baby last year and i just
81
don't have the patience to just you know be some uh-huh
82
83
84
is this your first baby have you crocheted or knitted any baby clothes or baby blankets
85
86
87
um
88
i crocheted an afghan for our bed that's the only thing and and i did a quilt let's see i've done a quilt for our baby and i've done a quilt for our bed but i mean
89
90
91
did you embroidery the pattern and then quilt it yourself or
92
93
94
um
95
96
97
how how did you make a quilt
98
99
100
101
102
um our baby's quilt it was a pre
103
like the design i just went around the design in the quilt i didn't piece it or anything like that
104
105
106
uh-huh
107
108
109
but uh
110
111
112
but you actually hand quilted it yourself
113
114
115
uh-huh and just
116
117
118
did did you need a loom or were you able was it small enough that you could just hold it
119
120
121
um
122
i put it on the frame the quilting frame
123
have you are you familiar with that yeah okay
124
125
126
uh-huh
127
but um
128
my again my mother back in Indiana we had a quilting frame in our basement and she would she would quilt whole quilts by herself
129
130
131
oh my God
132
133
134
um yes which i was always amazed i have one of them um but uh you know to have the quilting frame and then to actually do that it's a tremendous amount of work
135
136
137
well i haven't done tons of them
138
but um i used to do more before um
139
before i had before we got our baby but
140
141
142
have you think children you can um use crafts to make wonderful things for children
143
144
145
uh-huh
146
147
148
i think when babies i think afghans and and the crocheted little sweaters and
149
are are wonderful and and they'll wear them once they get old enough to talk then they no longer will wear your
150
151
152
yeah exactly
153
well one thing that i like about this fabric painting thing is i can just
154
make a T-shirt and put a little ruffle around it and then um cut out a little pattern from the material from some material like flowers or something and make
155
um a design or you know a little arrangement or something on the shirt and you know fuse it on with
156
Heat and Bond or whatever and then paint around it and i usually sew sew around the flower whatever first
157
and then i paint around it so you can't see the stitching as much
158
does does that make sense to you
159
160
161
oh yes i think it's very clever it's uh funny that you said for Christmas my daughter and i received matching sweat shirts that a friend had made for ours a beautiful Christmas design and they were matching and they were lovely
162
163
164
so
165
oh
166
167
168
but when i washed them although i took the precaution of turning them inside out i really didn't do anything else and truly everything fell off or most of it so i had i went and bought just some
169
170
171
oh sure uh-huh
172
oh really
173
174
175
cloth glue and glued it all back and i bought the paint and redid most of the edges and and it was salvageable and i
176
177
178
oh
179
180
181
but it's so i'm familiar with that but i think you're very clever to um sew around the edges i think gluing alone
182
certainly if you wash it any amount of time it tends to kind of come loose at the edges
183
184
185
well
186
yeah someone told me that that it that they had done it both ways and i've always after hearing that i always sewed it on even
187
even with the uh a loose zigzag even helps
188
and um
189
190
191
192
