Over the past few months
11
in my cross-divisional capacity, I have been formulating plans for Microsoft to
12
operate as a real player in the NY/LA Media and Entertainment nexus. This is
13
the first of a number of directives I plan to issue to that end.
14
15
As you are all aware,
16
Microsoft has moved heavily into media, and our division is a key part of that
17
strategy. After six months of study I have determined--through a ton of
18
research and collaboration--that one of the key elements missing in the
19
Microsoft culture is some sense of the hype, buzz, style, and attitude that are
20
so key to success in the media and entertainment industries.
21
22
If we want to play with
23
the big boys in LA and NY, we have to dress like the big boys in LA and
24
NY--even if we are girls.
25
26
I hope that we will have
27
your support in this effort to make us more competitive and Seattle a real hub
28
for media and entertainment.
29
30
Effective immediately, all
31
media and editorial folks will conform to the following dress code:
32
33
1) Wear more black. My
34
suggestion is that one piece of black clothing be immediately visible at all
35
times. Not only is it a good idea and slimming, it can help us to identify the
36
greater and greater numbers of editorial- and media-type folks now working on
37
our RedWest campus. (I wouldn't be surprised if traditional Microsofties
38
started incorporating our fashion sense as well.) Which brings me to ...
39
40
2) Polar fleece will be
41
worn only under other items of clothing and only for the purpose of warmth on
42
days that the thermometer in the cafeteria dips below freezing point at
43
noon.
44
45
3) Microsoft Training and
46
Certification will immediately launch a new series of courses called "Dressing
47
for Media." Each course will take only one morning to complete, and I think
48
that all will find it quite useful. Pamela Lopez, a new employee from
49
Vogue , will be leading the morning sessions for women, and is
50
spearheading creation of the Day to Evening Makeup Web site. (Though it was
51
originally intended only for the internal audience, we hope to eventually
52
establish Pamela's Web site as a platform, much like Expedia, and to sell it to
53
Revlon, Maybelline, etc.) The focus will be very much along the IDA--gain
54
insight-make decisions-take actions--lines of the enhanced Service Journalism
55
Mission that has been evangelized for our division. Let's remember that it's
56
not that Microsoft folks don't want to look chic--it's just that they need help
57
choosing which shade of blue eye shadow works this spring.
58
59
4) Our next ISM Editorial
60
Lead meeting will be an offsite to discuss "Bringing Fashion to RedWest." It
61
will be at Barneys downtown.
62
63
5) Our cafeteria
64
contractor, Marriott, has agreed to allow ISM editorial folks to reserve tables
65
upstairs in the Euro Cafe. Involved with this is a major re-org. Chief
66
latte-puller Walter will be moving to a new and more appropriate position as
67
maitre d', stationed at the Building A entrance. The company has agreed to
68
purchase a limited number of white tablecloths, real silver, and nonrecyclable
69
crystal. Full-time employees holding a blue ID card may reserve tables on a
70
first-come-first-served basis. An orange contractor card automatically gets you
71
seated in Siberia. Sorry, the tax laws. You know.
72
73
6) Prada and Gucci will be
74
opening boutiques in the Microsoft Company Store. Estimated date of arrival:
75
May 1998 (but that could slip).
76
77
7) We will have Casual
78
Fridays like all other good media companies, but that doesn't mean you should
79
just slip back into your Office 97 jacket or that favorite Microsoft Bob
80
T-shirt.
81
82
8) No shorts before
83
Memorial Day.
84
85
9) No Teva sandals after
86
Labor Day.
87
88
10) Hemp is not an
89
approved fiber.
90
91
11) College T-shirts are
92
not chic.
93
94
12) If you're pulling an
95
all-nighter, bring a change of clothing, please.
96
97
13) Gentlemen may remove
98
their jackets if attending an offsite at GameWorks.
99
100
14) Blue hair is
101
appropriate only for those who have graduated from college in the previous 12
102
months.
103
104
15) Security-guard chic
105
went out last year. Displaying your Microsoft employee ID badge outside your
106
clothing will not win you a place on Mr. Blackwell's Best Dressed List, and is
107
no longer acceptable.
108
109
16) Wear
110
sunglasses--preferably black--inside. Incognito is mandatory for media types.
111
(And it's good cover when your eyes glaze over during discussions of SQL
112
servers.)
113
114
17) Finally, to raise our
115
profile as media players, Motorola StarTAC cell phones will be issued to all
116
media employees. However, as part of our attempt to participate in Microsoft's
117
program to control the cost beast, they will not be connected for service.
