Starting today, a new "Ubuntu 24.04"-based software environment became the default for new projects. First off, you can still select the previous default environment, which is called "Ubuntu 22.04 (until June 2025)". We plan to maintain it for a bit longer, but down the road we'll focus on the new environment. For existing projects, you can switch over in Project Settings → Project Control → Software Environment.

Regarding programming languages and features:

• Python: there is now a new "CoCalc Python" environment, which is a separate environment based on popular packages. One small change to the previous environment is, that terminals now run inside that CoCalc Python environment by default. As before, we also provide an Anaconda-based environment, which you can start via anaconda2025. As before, we also maintain a copy of Colab's environment.

• R: we switched to providing a larger number of packages, provided by r2u, for an easier and more convenient experience.

• Sage: the latest version of SageMath is provided – you have to switch to "Ubuntu 22.04" for earlier releases.
