13
how do you uh manage your budget
14
15
16
well let's see we or i sit down at the
17
18
19
20
21
22
23
uh in a on a monthly or a biweekly i get paid every two weeks so i make out a budget for every two weeks and
24
i sit down and see how much money i have to have for my bills going out
25
and then i compare that to uh how much money we need to make and
26
then just set it up that way and allot this much money for everything and if we have any left over we'll
27
uh you know buy clothes or have fun go out to eat or something
28
and we're going to try to start saving
29
as soon as we can
30
we generally don't have a lot left over but as far as the long term our long-term goal is to to get out of debt
31
32
33
um-hum
34
35
36
and uh
37
most most of our debts are from before we were married and we're trying to get rid of you know student loans those kinds of things
38
39
40
yeah
41
well i in my younger years i'd always heard the adage you should uh buy as much of a house as you can afford
42
43
44
um-hum
45
46
47
uh because of the uh improvement in real estate prices
48
and on the last move we bought ourselves a fairly large house
49
and i've got some pretty stiff mortgage payments now
50
51
52
yeah
53
54
55
and uh the uh
56
improvement in uh income and uh investments and so forth has not uh come at the rate i've expected so we're still kind of hurting by the uh high mortgage payments and we haven't gotten out from under them yet
57
58
59
yeah
60
61
62
but uh
63
so far we've managed to hold our own by uh
64
trying to set up a a monthly budget
65
66
67
yeah
68
69
70
uh i try to take out just so much cash for me and my uh give so much cash to my wife
71
72
73
um-hum
74
75
76
to spend on groceries and clothing and fuel for the car
77
and then the rest of it's uh pretty much fixed expenses uh mortgage electricity
78
uh water and uh
79
and garbage collection and telephone bills and cable television bills
80
and those are pretty much fixed
81
82
83
yeah yeah that's basically the kinds of bills we have are on our budget are you know the needs the have to haves and
84
you know those kinds of things uh we don't have a lot of uh
85
you know like JC Penny's in our in our budget and uh maybe twice a year we're to where i can let my wife go clothes shopping like that and
86
87
88
yeah
89
90
91
let's see my mother-in-law lives uh not too far from here so she helps with our son's clothes when she can
92
93
94
um-hum
95
96
97
and
98
that's real good and uh
99
well at TI i have a real good benefits package for uh
100
uh
101
you know like for going to the doctor and that kind of thing so that's not something i really have to put in the budget that seriously
102
so
103
104
105
yeah no my wife's pretty good about uh grocery shopping and
106
107
108
yeah
109
110
111
she pitches in and uh makes clothes for the kids
112
113
114
really well that's neat
115
116
117
uh which is a big help uh one of our big problems though is handling unexpected uh uh budget items
118
119
120
yeah
121
122
123
like this month the uh heat pump went out and uh
124
125
126
um yeah
127
128
129
they want pretty close to three thousand dollars just to replace that
130
131
132
wow
133
so what do you do
134
135
136
well uh we have to cut into the savings uh at this point to uh to buffer that
137
138
139
oh
140
wow
141
142
143
and
144
145
146
well that's good that you have the savings to get into
147
148
149
150
151
then maybe we'll go for a week or two and or a month or two and then the car breaks down
152
153
154
155
156
157
158
so it's the unexpected things that make it awful hard to control the budget
159
160
161
wow
162
yeah that's
163
that's the way we are we've had a lot of unexpected things just in the last uh couple months
164
165
166
yeah
167
168
169
that uh really hit us hard but i've been able to work enough overtime to you know really help with the with covering the expenses
170
so but we've never been we've been married for uh nearly four years and we've never been able to save any money and i think it's just
171
hit both of us uh just in the past few months that we need to start saving some money no matter what we do we need to put that in our budget and just start doing it
172
173
174
yeah
175
176
177
even if it's you know ten dollars a week
178
and so we're going to start doing that or actually we started two paychecks ago
179
and that was uh i think that was a really wise decision
180
181
182
well do you have some uh savings plans at work
183
184
185
no actually i'm i'm not involved in anything like that at work or
186
uh anywhere uh i don't have anything to fall back on at all
187
188
189
yeah
190
191
192
and i i know that's not wise but
193
that's just uh where we're at right now my wife just went back to work part-time uh she can substitute teach at schools
194
and uh there's so many school districts and schools here in the metroplex that uh by turning her name in if she wanted to she could work
195
196
197
yeah
198
199
200
you know everyday but
201
we're we're just going to let her work one maybe two days a week and we're just going to apply all the money that she makes to uh
202
uh our debts and try to get as much out of debt as fast we can
203
204
205
yeah
206
um-hum
207
208
209
and there's and we're we're Christians and that's uh we've only been Christians for about five years but that's a a real a biblical truth in the Bible is to
210
to not be in debt and we're really starting to see the the the reasoning behind that
211
212
213
um-hum
214
215
216
and uh because we're you know we're always well i can't be sick this week but one day
217
218
219
yeah
220
221
222
or you know this month but one day because you know our bills will catch up with us if i am
223
or you know i can't we can't go on a two week vacation because
224
uh i wouldn't make any overtime in two weeks so that would really hurt us financially and you know just things like that all time and you know we we really see how we're
225
226
227
um-hum
228
229
230
you know indebted or nearly underneath uh the debt that we have
231
232
233
yeah
234
235
236
you know and that's that's really hard but
237
so far we've never really uh been behind on any bills uh
238
i had to put our student loans on hold once for about i think three months
239
240
241
um-hum
242
243
244
and we had a a cutback at work
245
and uh this is this was a couple of years back
246
but anyway but we're doing really good we're not saving but we're staying right even
247
248
249
well we've been looking around at uh
250
uh trying to develop some side activities that that might help out such as uh creating some craft objects that we can market in the uh local stores
251
252
253
oh yeah
254
255
256
or uh
257
uh making uh some dresses for children or things l ike that or even writing children's books
258
259
260
yeah that's neat
261
oh that's neat yeah
262
263
264
and uh
265
266
267
268
269
270
271
i tried uh this past year writing uh journal articles but uh i found out it cost me more than the the honorariums i got for writing them
272
273
274
wow
275
oh wow because of the time
276
277
278
uh well especially the first one because i wound up buying a lot of reprints for handouts and i ate up all my profits with uh
279
280
281
wow
282
right
283
284
285
buying reprints
286
287
288
right
289
wow
290
yeah my my wife made uh a whole lot of crafts last year for Christmas presents
291
292
293
um-hum
294
295
296
and we didn't uh
297
you know have to allot any well hardly very very much money anyway for Christmas just for our uh personal family just me and her and our son and
298
i think her mom and that was really you know about it we we made everything else that uh we gave for Christmas last year
299
300
301
um-hum
302
yeah
303
304
305
and she did really good with that
306
307
308
oh we thought we were going to be pretty tight with Christmas this past year
309
310
311
um-hum
312
313
314
but uh we have a family dog that uh ate all of the children's toys
315
so coming up to Christmas time the girls didn't have any toys so we had to go out and
316
317
318
oh wow
319
wow
320
oh no
321
322
323
and get them a whole new set of playthings
324
325
326
wow
327
328
329
330
331
now i don't know how the dog has fared eating all that plastic and uh and stuffed animal stuffing but he's still here
332
333
334
335
336
wow wow that's pretty pretty bizarre the dog ate the Christmas presents
337
that's funny well anyway what uh is the economy doing pretty good there where you're at
338
339
340
so far it's uh doing fairly well uh we're in the metropolitan Washington area
341
and uh i guess most of the area is still living off the federal government with uh
342
beltway bandit type contracts
343
uh our company is uh done fairly well
344
345
346
um-hum
347
348
349
and uh
350
351
352
yeah what company is it
353
354
355
i'm with the Melpar division of E-Systems
356
357
358
oh of E-Systems okay
359
360
361
yeah
362
363
364
i see what do you all make
365
366
367
uh we're primarily in the uh uh systems integrations business
368
369
370
oh
371
372
373
selling to the government
374
375
376
377
