hi what do you do with your credit cards
8
9
10
oh well my husband and i have gotten into some some problems with credit cards we don't handle them very well
11
12
13
14
15
16
17
we we tend to run them up to the maximum and then ask for more
18
19
20
oh jeez
21
22
23
they they're they're really bad for us um matter of fact we've gotten rid of all of our credit cards except for a MasterCard and a Visa
24
then and we pretty much keep those maxed out
25
26
27
28
29
oh i was going to say that that sounds like like pretty many but i see what you meant you had them for each of the individual stores
30
31
32
yeah we had credit i had probably twenty credit cards
33
34
35
um-hum um-hum
36
37
38
um for i had i had an American Express American Express Gold an Optima all the different department stores um
39
two Visas two MasterCards
40
41
42
oh gee
43
44
45
i mean i had any time anybody would
46
you know send me an application you know preapproved or whatever i went i took it and it really ended up getting us in some real serious trouble
47
48
49
oh sure
50
51
52
um
53
because see the more the more credit cards you have the more people offer them to you
54
55
56
um-hum um-hum
57
58
59
um and the more you use them the more the more they send them to you
60
61
62
but each of these had an annual fee also right
63
64
65
exactly and the American Express was probably the worst the worst
66
um because the with the Gold card i can't remember how much it was because i didn't even have it very long before i gave it up
67
68
69
um-hum
70
71
72
but i know the Green card was like thirty five forty five dollars a year
73
74
75
yeah i'm forty five
76
right i i
77
78
79
um
80
which was a lot because i mean you had to pay it in full every month
81
82
83
exactly you know i that's it i really resented the fact that they were charging me for cards so i sent back all of mine except the ones that were free
84
85
86
uh-huh
87
88
89
and um then then i also limited it to one of each
90
one MasterCard and one one Visa and here most of the stores will accept those and actually i then got a Discover card since they pay you back
91
92
93
um-hum yeah i had a Discover and that was one of the ones in the group that i ended up um closing
94
95
96
uh
97
98
99
um
100
it really wasn't my choice though i mean i ended up having i ended up actually losing my credit cards um i ended up going through a credit counseling service
101
102
103
oh
104
um-hum um-hum
105
106
107
um because my husband and i just don't handle credit very well
108
109
110
um-hum yeah
111
112
113
and um when when you do that they automatically once you start with their service they close your accounts out
114
115
116
oh i see
117
118
119
so i'm still paying on all these accounts but my accounts are closed
120
121
122
yeah
123
yeah
124
125
126
so and i would prefer to keep it that way once we once we're paid off
127
128
129
um-hum
130
131
132
um
133
i would prefer just to have one MasterCard and one Visa and that's it
134
135
136
yeah yeah actually i pay off my cards every month only once in my life have i not paid
137
138
139
i think that's a really good way to handle it because that way if you if you paid off every month you never have to worry about well
140
how much do i have to pay these guys you know this month you know this you buy what you can afford i mean if you handle it just like you would like a check or cash
141
142
143
um-hum
144
right and
145
um-hum um-hum
146
147
148
um it's a lot easier to keep it in check
149
150
151
well and also in a sense they're giving you a loan for a month so that
152
153
154
yeah
155
156
157
you know if i were smarter i would have that same amount in savings and get the interest which i don't do but
158
159
160
um-hum
161
162
163
but yeah the
164
the thought of adding you know X percent to to the price of what i buy i just i can't accept
165
166
167
yeah and i and i think at this at this point in time with the economy the way it is
168
um
169
i think that um it's going to get even worse
170
171
172
um-hum
173
174
175
um
176
i'm i'm glad that we're starting to pay our debts off off now
177
um
178
you know we started we started i mean we started this last year
179
180
181
um-hum um-hum
182
183
184
and we probably still have about another year to go before we're completely out of the hole
185
186
187
um-hum
188
189
190
but i think this they way the whole economy's is going right now it's just not good to be in debt
191
192
193
that's right that's right
194
yeah yeah that i would that would be a very scary feeling for me to know that i was you know juggling payments to different people
195
196
197
um-hum
198
199
200
i guess because i never experienced it and it's not because you know i'm rich or anything it's just uh a mental concept that i have
201
202
203
yeah
204
205
206
yeah that i just
207
208
209
well when when it's you when you're getting rid of the whole credit card cycle and if you really get into the mind set
210
i got really good at juggling money and basically robbing Peter to pay Paul and i and i it was scary because i was so good at it
211
212
213
uh-huh uh-huh
214
215
216
and i thought this this is not right i mean this has got to stop because eventually it'd end up catching up at and catching up with me and it hit me in the face
217
218
219
right right
220
221
222
um
223
224
225
but it sounds like you know you you learned from it and you're coming out of it all right
226
227
228
i yeah i have i've learned a lot from it um i've learned that credit cards are extremely dangerous in my hand
229
230
231
um-hum
232
um-hum um-hum
233
234
235
and my husband's too because he's he's the same way i am
236
237
238
um-hum
239
240
241
i don't i don't think that
242
well when we when we buy on credit we just don't have a concept of how much money we're spending
243
244
245
um-hum
246
247
248
until the bill comes in
249
250
251
um-hum
252
253
254
and all then all of a sudden you look at the bill and you go oh my gosh i spent this much
255
256
257
um-hum but now the fact that you still have two cards are you do you use them more judiciously
258
259
260
yeah we pretty much use them for for emergency type things like um
261
transmission fell out on our car
262
263
264
uh yeah
265
266
267
and that paid for a new transmission
268
269
270
um-hum
271
272
273
um and and things like that um
274
and we try we try not to use them for you know
275
276
277
purchases
278
279
280
inc idental type things like you know gas and stuff like that
281
282
283
um-hum um-hum
284
clothing sales sales i find are a pain
285
286
287
288
yeah
289
yeah
290
i've i've gotten i've gotten a lot more away from from credit cards and i i pay by check a lot more now
291
292
293
um-hum
294
well it sounds good you know like i said it sounds like you're you've really got it under control
295
296
297
i i admire you for for having that um
298
uh mind set for not not even getting you know past that thirty days i i would that's ideally the where where i would like to be
299
300
301
um-hum
302
um-hum um-hum
303
yeah and like i said once once it it happened i couldn't because my son's tuition came due and i guess i had you know not really counted on it quite
304
at that point but um yeah i didn't like it at all i was very uncomfortable so you know and and i mean it was
305
306
307
um-hum
308
i can imagine
309
310
311
i thought a lot sixty dollars interest or something for for just a couple of months and i'm going jeez that's outrageous but in in you know retrospect it wasn't all that much i mean a lot of people pay a lot more and
312
313
314
yeah
315
oh yeah
316
317
318
and you know but still i mean i figured i didn't need those items if it cost me sixty dollars more to have them
319
320
321
um-hum
322
you think about what you can buy for sixty dollars
323
324
325
exactly groceries for a week yeah
326
327
328
yeah yeah
329
i i think about all all the money that that we've spent on interest
330
331
332
um-hum
333
334
335
on all of our credit cards and it's just incredible
336
337
338
but now did you use to not feel so badly because you could take it off your income tax
339
340
341
we've never been able to take it off our income tax i'm i'm fairly newly married i've only been married um less than two years
342
343
344
um-hum
345
346
347
and before that
348
i never owned a home or anything so i never had any deductions
349
350
351
right right
352
353
354
so really it was always just money
355
356
357
thrown away yeah jeez
358
359
360
thrown away
361
and i never really thought about it because
362
363
364
you were good at it
365
366
367
yeah i was so good at it that it just kind of got stuck in the back of my mind and just never
368
369
370
um-hum
371
372
373
um became a real problem until all of a sudden it came an insurmountable problem
374
375
376
yeah i suspect that you know thinking about it and looking at my friends and the number of credit cards that they use and you know the amount that i know they buy i guess probably a lot of them are
377
in a similar situation and you know just don't talk about it
378
379
380
yeah
381
most most people don't like to talk about money they feel uncomfortable i think
382
383
384
um-hum um-hum um-hum
385
386
387
you know because i mean i guess for a lot of people it is very personal
388
389
390
very personal
391
um-hum
392
yeah and especially if you if you don't feel you're handling it quite right or that somebody might make fun of you or that it would be
393
394
395
yeah
396
but i i think the the average American is probably
397
pretty heavily in debt
398
399
400
um-hum
401
402
403
not not including like a mortgage i mean a mortgage is an understandable debt
404
405
406
um-hum
407
408
409
um because that's you have you have to have a roof over your head
410
411
412
right
413
414
415
and i would much rather own my own home than than
416
be renting it like we're doing i mean we're basically you know kind of throwing seven hundred dollars a month away
417
418
419
um-hum
420
421
422
we're renting a house
423
424
425
um-hum
426
427
428
but
429
but you know right now with the way our credit card situation is there's nobody in the world that's going to
430
give us a mortgage on a house
431
432
433
right right
434
but but once i suppose you you prove yourself by paying this off next year you'll be in very good shape
435
436
437
yeah
438
yeah it's it's going to it's going to take quite a while um hopefully within five years we'll be in our own home
439
440
441
um-hum
442
um-hum
443
444
445
but um i'm not really counting on it real soon
446
447
448
um-hum um-hum so that's that's been an even harder lesson then if it affected
449
450
451
yeah
452
453
454
455
